Vanadinite is a magnificent naturally occurring crystal formed by the oxidation of lead ore deposits in arid climates and is an important ore of vanadium. It is found in North and South America, Europe and Africa. Notable deposits are found in Arizona, Mexico and Morocco. Morocco is a famous source for outstanding specimens. Vanadinite crystals range from blood red to orange in color, and transparent to translucent hexagonal crystals. Because of its stunning color and crystal structure, vanadinite is a favorite of collectors. Chemically it is composed of about 73% lead, 25% vanadium oxide, and 2% chlorine. It is a relatively soft mineral having a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 3, meaning it can be easily scratched.
Vanadium is used in both the steel industry as well as the fabric industry. Vanadium alloy steels are used to make axles, gears, crankshafts, jet engine parts, springs, etc. However, the fabric industry also provides a major use of a vanadium compound as mordant, a material which permanently fixes dyes to fabrics.
Vanadinite can promote mental stimulation thereby giving one the added persistence and will to see projects through to completion. It is known to aid writer’s block. For meditation, vanadinite is a grounding stone stimulating the sixth chakra linking it with the first, second and third chakras facilitating clear thought, determination, and organization. It also provides spiritual protection from radiation.
