Bloodstone also known as Heliotrope is a dark green chalcedony with red inclusions of red jasper. The "classic" bloodstone is translucent to opaque green chalcedony and red jasper that may resemble spots of blood, hence the name bloodstone. Other colors of chalcedony may also occur in Indian bloodstone, such as white, yellow, or blue. Most stones are of the opaque dark green chalcedony with flecks of red jasper. True Indian bloodstone is primarily found in the Deccan Traps (lava flows) of India; however, other similar stones (green jasper with red inclusions) have been found throughout the world.
True Bloodstone is considered a semi-precious stone and has been used for centuries as jewelry or simply carried as a talisman. At various times throughout history, it was thought to have magical properties, to control rain and solar eclipses, to slow bleeding, to provide endurance, protect against venomous creatures, success, and even as the product of the everlasting battle of the giant faire-folk as manifested in the aurora borealis.
Bloodstone is said to provide strong protection against negative energies. Additionally, Bloodstone soothes fear, irritability, aggressiveness, impatience, and loneliness. It encourages us to be more self-sufficient and independent, while also being willing to support and help others. Bloodstone gives us courage to face unpleasant situations boldly and is especially useful during times of crisis when quick and sensible action is needed.
