Amethyst

SCIENTIFIC

Amethyst, a variety of quartz, is a hard (Mohs =7) crystalline mineral composed of silicon and oxygen (SiO2); with trace amounts of iron.  After crystallization, gamma rays, emitted by radioactive material in the host rock irradiate the iron to produce the purple color.  Depending on the concentration of the iron, the intensity of the radiation, and the variation in temperature, the color can range from very light almost imperceptible to very dark nearly opaque purple.  Subjecting amethyst to heat can change the color to either yellow (citrine) or sometimes green (prasiolite).  Ametrine is a variety where purple and yellow colors occur naturally in the same crystal though it is rare coming from only one source in Bolivia.

USES

The value of amethyst is in its use in jewelry and for display.  It is by far the most common purple mineral.   Synthetic amethyst is now so good it is impossible to distinguish from natural stone unless inclusions can be found in the specimen.
